Edgardo Alpizar Vargas was born in San José, Costa Rica on October 06, 1977. His family, coffee farmers since four generations had a great influence on his agricultural education and passion for this crop. He obtained a B. Sc. in Agronomy at EARTH University in 1999. Soon after, he enrolled in M.S. and Ph.D. programs to conduct studies in coffee breeding at University of Costa Rica and Ecole Nationale Supériore Agronomique de Montpellier (France) in 2003 and 2006 respectively. His thesis and dissertation topics were on the evaluation of resistance genes of coffee plant to root nematodes. Before and after earned the Ph.D. degree, he was employed by Doka Estate in Alajuela, Costa Rica as technical manager & coordinator for environmental management system responsible 1 500 has of coffee plantation. Since 2010 he started as Research and Development Advisor for Mesoamerica for ECOM Agro-industrial Corp. Among his actual duties he is responsible for a collaborative ECOM-CIRAD project, with the objective to strength the income of coffee & cocoa farmers through sustainable management services (SMS) that improves the yield & quality of their product.
