Dr. Bernardo van Raij was nominated for the 1999 Award, which is reserved for researchers from developing countries, by IFA's member company, Manah S.A. The selection was made by a panel of ten eminent scientists. The Award honours Dr van Raij for a career dedicated to research work in the field of soil fertility analysis and plant nutrition.

Van Raij obtained his PhD from Cornell University. Starting his career as a soil chemist, he moved on to research on soil fertility. He greatly contributed to the advancement of soil analysis and lime recommendations in Brazil. His work on soil testing led to the routine adoption of an "ion exchange resin" method for the analysis of soil phosphate, which is now used in 70 laboratories in eight Brazilian states. Author and co-author of over 150 publications, his research has been comprehensive, original and well communicated. Van Raij's work could have important implications for improving the productivity of tropical soils in many developing countries.
